Networking means making connections.
The CCNA is Cisco’s associate-level networking certification. To earn a CCNA, you pass a proctored exam which Cisco creates, to demonstrate that you know the basics of how to run a network.
CCNA certifications have been around for awhile. Until recently we offered many CCNAs, each of which focused on a different area of network infrastructure. But now we’ve consolidated all those CCNAs into a single, foundational certification, to serve as a springboard no matter where you want to focus later on. The new CCNA also simplifies the certification process. There’s now only one exam, and one Cisco training course to help you get ready.
It’s a new world. Let’s build it together.
What do video games, streaming services, tele-medicine, distance learning, video calls, online shopping, and social media all have in common? Two things: we depend on them to connect us 24x7, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, and they all depend on the invisible infrastructure of the internet.
But it turns out that the infrastructure isn’t invisible after all. The internet runs on hardware (called routers and switches) and software, the same way that phones and computers do. And keeping that infrastructure running requires a particular set of knowledge and skills. Everyone who works on networks had to learn how to do their job. No one among us is born knowing how to subnet.
The internet has seen a surge in traffic, coinciding with world-wide layoffs in every sector of the economy. Could networking be an option if you need to change careers? Maybe you’ve been working in networking for awhile. But maybe you haven’t. Either way, if you are at or near the beginning of a career in networking, Cisco associate-level certifications like CCNA can give you the knowledge and credibility for challenging, rewarding, and meaningful work.
New to networking? The water’s fine, come on in.
I want to give a special shout-out to the women reading this. Networking infrastructure has been a bit of a man’s world for a long time. Personally, I suspect there’s a cultural legacy at play. Back when “infrastructure” only meant things like bridges and roads, most of the work required a certain amount of physical muscle. But network infrastructure doesn’t care who types the commands that run routers and switches.
And a career in networking isn’t limited to building and maintaining that infrastructure. The network needs leaders, sellers, and marketers, too. In the field of networking, CCNA can give you a boost in all those roles. That’s true for companies like Cisco that build infrastructure, but also for all the companies that depend on that infrastructure. Cable companies. Cell phone companies. Technology giants. And many others. There’s a world of opportunity for women just as much as for men.
My point is that you don’t have to be a techie to reap the benefits of a career in technology. But a certification can help you land a job and begin the journey. Whether you prefer to design, build, and protect the network’s infrastructure, or you’d rather market, sell, support, or lead in a networking company, CCNA can make your resume stand out from the crowd.
It boils down to a handful of personality traits. Are you persistent? Focused? Resourceful? Detail-oriented? Do you like solving puzzles? Then let’s get you started. Invest 2 or 3 months to learn the material, then pass the exam, then you’re off to the races.
We all need the network, and the network needs you.
Networking means creating connections in ever new ways – and ever safer ways – and fixing those connections when something goes wrong. Networking certification isn’t easy – that’s why it has value – but if you’re up for the challenge, we’re here to help. We offer training, community support, and practice tools.
